The Paoli Fire Company was dispatched at 8:16 p.m.to the 700 block of Hillview Rd. in Willistown Township for a garage fire.
Initial 9-1-1 calls reported a detached garage on fire with an apartment above, with all residents safely evacuated. Due to the fire hydrant spacing and long driveways in this area, Engine 4-5 was called in at 8:20 p.m. to respond from the Malvern Fire Company. This pumper tanker unit carries nearly 3,000 gallons of water.
Paoli Chief 3 (Ira Dutter) arrived on location and reported a detached garage engulfed in flames. Chief Dutter then requested additional fire crews from Berwyn, East Whiteland, and Kimberton to assist at 8:27 p.m, which included two more tanker trucks.
Berwyn firefighters assisted as the Rapid Intervention Team (RIT). This is a specialized rescue team of highly trained firefighters that stand ready in the event that a firefighter goes down or becomes trapped in the building. Later, the Berwyn crew assisted with extinguishment and overhaul to check for hidden fire in the walls of the garage.
A large portion of the garage was destroyed, along with two passenger cars. The main home on the property was unaffected by the fire. There were no reported firefighter or civilian injuries. The Chester County Fire Marshal's Office is investigating the cause of the fire.
Berwyn Tower 2 was clear of the scene at 10:17 p.m. |
