48 Hour Call Log During Hurricane Sandy

November 2, 2012

The Berwyn Fire Company (BFC) officially opened its "Emergency Operations Center' on Monday, October 29th at 12 Noon as high winds and rain bands began to pick-up from Hurricane Sandy.

Personnel spent the weekend doing final preparations for the impending storm and held a staff meeting with nearly 40 members attending on Sunday afternoon.

The station was staffed with 45 volunteers and 10 paid personnel at varying points during the storm. Berwyn first responders were able to answer all calls for service and at one point had all apparatus on the street responding to incidents in Tredyffrin and Easttown Townships.

The predominant emergency was power lines coming down, telephone poles falling and large trees toppling that in some instances caught fire. A house fire was also responded to, where a candle being used for light during the power outage started a fire on the 2nd floor of a home in the 800 block of Maple Ave. in Easttown. Due to the quick response by fire crews the home was saved. Radnor, Paoli and Malvern assisted on this incident.

As PECO crews continue to work through an extensive list of issues on roadways and around homes, we ask the public to be patient and if you see a downed wire or tree leaning on wires to call PECO at 1-800-841-4141 to report it and stay away. If you see arching, sparking or a fire involving a power line dial 9-1-1. On a final note, the Berwyn Fire Company and T-E Public Works crews can't do any work in or around power lines that are compromised, until PECO can confirm the power is off. When you see barricades, caution tape, etc. after a storm event that means the area isn't clear and is unsafe.

We are very fortunate and lucky the storm did not hit us with the intensity as was predicated. However, BFC did stay steady with call volume as the storm passed through and has been responding to storm related incidents for the balance of the past week.

Here is the official BFC call log from Monday, October 29th 6 a.m. – Wednesday, October, 31st 6 a.m.
