The Berwyn Fire Company was dispatched to the 200 block of Brookmead Rd. in Tredyffrin Township for a carbon monoxide alarm activation at 6:08 p.m. The call for the CO alarm sounding came from the homeowners alarm company, who in turn contacted the Chester County 9-1-1 Center to dispatch the fire company to investigate. Assistant Chief Eamon Brazunas was still in the neighborhood after clearing an earlier call in the same area involving a power line that had fallen causing a small grass fire near the street. At the same time, Berwyn Engine 2-2 responded from the Chesterbrook area after assisting Berwyn's Ambulance at a medical emergency. After a walk around of the residence a strong smell of wood burning was detected and smoke could be seen in the home. The call was then upgraded to a house fire response bringing additional fire/EMS resources from neighboring agencies. The crew of Engine 2-2 forced entry into the home and rapidly searched the residence to locate the fire which was found in the basement. The fire was extinguished, while additional firefighters checked the walls above the fire on the 1st floor to ensure the fire did not extend into the rest of the home. Firefighters also opened windows and utilized fans to remove the smoke from the home. There were no reported firefighter or civilian injuries. The home was unoccupied at the the time of the fire. Chief Matthew Norris served as the Incident Commander for the incident and cleared all units from the scene by 7:29 p.m. The Chester County Fire Marshal is investigating the cause of the fire. |
