BERWYN, PA - The Berwyn Fire Company was dispatched at 9:10 a.m. for a fire alarm system activation at Conestoga High School in Tredyffrin Township.

While Berwyn Engine 2-2 and MICU 102 were enroute, the Chester County 9-1-1 Center advised that they had a report from the school of a fire in a classroom. With this information, the call was upgraded to a building fire response adding Paoli, Radnor, Malvern and Newtown Square fire companies to the assignment.

Berwyn Engine 2-2 arrived at 9:14 a.m. with the school safely evacuated and school staff reporting that a fire had occurred, but that they believed it was out. Upon investigation a small fire had started on a stovetop in a cooking class. The fire was extinguished with a dry chemical fire extinguisher, but there was still a smoke condition present.

The response was held to Berwyn units and the ladder truck from Paoli as firefighters used fans to clear the smoke from the building.

All students, teachers and staff were able to return to their normal school day within the hour. Fortunately there were no injuries reported due to the quick actions of teachers and staff.

The Tredyffrin Township Police Department also provided assistance on the scene. As of 4:40 p.m. today, this was one of 8 fire/EMS calls that career staff and volunteers handled in the T-E community.
